Cost of Senior Care in Placer County

A planning baseline for Placer County families. There is no reliable county-only cost dataset, so these are the published California (statewide median) figures from the CareScout / Genworth Cost of Care Survey — not a number we made up. Actual prices vary by community and care level; always confirm with each facility.

Care typeTypical monthly
Assisted living$7,000/mo
Memory careNot surveyed separately — the national cost survey we cite doesn't publish a standalone memory-care median, so we won't show a number we can't source. In practice it's the assisted-living rate plus a care premium; confirm each community's price.
Nursing home (semi-private room)$12,167/mo
Nursing home (private room)$15,178/mo
In-home care (non-medical caregiver, ~44 hrs/week)$7,627/mo
Adult day health care$2,037/mo

Basis: California (statewide median) · CareScout / Genworth Cost of Care Survey, 2025. Monthly figures are the published annual medians divided by twelve. These are regional medians, not Placer County-specific rates.

How California families actually pay for this

Few families pay these figures entirely out of pocket for long. Most Placer County families end up combining private savings with one or more of: long-term care insurance, a VA benefit, or Medi-Cal. Our overview guide to paying for senior care walks through all of these options in plain language; the sections below go deeper on the two that trip families up most.

Want it mapped to your specific situation instead? Our Care Financing Roadmap asks a few questions about your assets, income, veteran status, and insurance, then sends you a personalized report on exactly which paths apply to you.

For families counting on Medi-Cal to help pay for skilled nursing or other long-term care, one change matters more than any other right now: California reinstated a Medi-Cal asset limit effective January 1, 2026, after having eliminated it entirely for the two prior years. If you’ve read anywhere that Medi-Cal has “no asset test,” that information is now out of date.

As of 2026, the non-MAGI Medi-Cal asset limit is $130,000 for one person, plus $65,000 for each additional household member (up to 10 people) — with a Community Spouse Resource Allowance of $162,660 and a Minimum Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance of $4,067/month when one spouse stays in the community. Medi-Cal generally covers skilled nursing facility care for those who qualify. It can cover the care portion (not room and board) of assisted living through the Assisted Living Waiver — but Placer County is not currently one of the participating counties, so IHSS and MSSP are the more realistic local paths to Medi-Cal-funded in-home and community-based support. Medi-Cal generally does not pay for long-term assisted living or memory care room-and-board directly. Families weighing whether to transfer assets before applying should also understand the look-back period and penalty rules, and what Medi-Cal can recover from an estate after death — both of which are more involved than most families expect.
