What fall detection actually catches

Automatic fall detection is genuinely useful for the specific scenario it’s built for — a fall that knocks someone unconscious or too injured to press the button — but it is not perfectly accurate. It can miss slow slides to the floor, and it can false-alarm on sudden movements like sitting down quickly. Treat it as a backup to a person who’s willing and able to press the button, not a replacement for it.

Costs and contract terms to check

• Monthly monitoring fees vary widely — compare the all-in monthly cost, not just the equipment price.
• Ask directly whether there’s a long-term contract and an early-cancellation fee.
• Confirm what happens to billing automatically if the equipment is returned or the person passes away — this is a common source of family complaints.
